The National Fund has been tasked by law with the planning, construction and future upkeep of this memorial. This has resulted in a clear objective: to create a dignified and worthy memorial for the victims and to give their history and fate a lasting and visibile place in public remembrance.

The workshop brought together representatives of the Roma and Sinti communities with experts in architecture, public art and competition management. The aim was to more precisely define the design criteria for the planned memorial.

A keynote speech by KÖR Initiative (Art in Public Space Vienna), on the design of contemporary memorials, as well as contributions from experts on competition procedures, provided professional perspectives and helped to further refine the basic premises for the competition.

The question of the memorial's location is currently still under discussion in ongoing dialogue with the project stakeholders.

A memorial to the Roma and Sinti who fell victim to National Socialism is a physical manifestation of historical responsibility. It is intended to help restore this Holocaust victim group, which has been underrepresented and barely visible in the public awareness for decades, to its rightful place in Austria's culture of remembrance.
